Our Industry

Cedar House continuously strives to acquire extensive knowledge of the bigger picture for long term Industry viability. We are continually reaching out to breeders world wide to discover the latest in genetics. Our interest lies in seeing the very best fibre being produced off our lines allowing us to supply heavy cutting fine micron fibre producing machos and breeders. These elite animals will create value for other Australian rural enterprises.

Industry Overview - as we see it

Australia is at the threshold of being a viable and important player in the International Alpaca arena. The industry has developed beyond its novelty or "craze" stage. Investors are no longer just looking for any stock. They want animals with superior genetics that grow fine, soft fibre. Increasing demand for such fibre is pushing producers towards the need to increase herd numbers with increased fibre producing capabilities.

The numbers needed to conservatively have a long-term viable commercial industry are 350,000 plus. With around 85,000 alpaca, of which half are for breeding, the balance for fibre production, the demand for growth is huge. It is interesting to note that there are 46,000 sheep growers but only 2,000 alpaca growers...investment growth opportunities are obvious. Furthermore alpaca are less work than sheep and easier to handle than cattle.

Prices are adjusting to cater for the differing levels of quality in the Australian herd. Imported stock is still high in price partially due to the cost of importation, but also due to the superiority of the stock. With limited opportunities for importations, strict selection criteria imposed by the Australian Alpaca Association (AAA) and the lack of successful artificial insemination techniques for alpaca, the high prices of imported stock will remain at the top end of the scale for some years.

Fashion

The fashion industry is clearly focused on a range of products creating an ever enticing range of garments. There is no longer the demand for the single product line, but more the need to blend many natural, and sometimes synthetic, fibres together.

Alpaca fibre is well placed to be a very selective ingredient in these exclusive and enticing creations. With two types of alpaca and the range of natural colours, this global industry is full of opportunities.

Our Property

We quickly outgrew our first property on 5 acres in Sydney and have since moved twice more, now settling on 210 acres at Marulan. Originally this was part of a much larger sheep grazing enterprise.

Description

The soil is granite with good quality pastures all year round. The winter is cold and the summers are hot and dry. The cold winters and cooler summer evenings encourage the growth of fine dense fibre.

Coupled with a mixture of improved and native pastures we are seeing the improvement in the fibre to cool evenings with water supplied from large dams which they frequent on hot days for a cooling bath on the edges. We have have a purpose built barn that doubles for shearing, cria care when required and many other stock handling activities. It is cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Location

Cedar House is conveniently located on the main southern highway to Melbourne Situated on the Southern route of the Hume Highway halfway between Bowral and Goulburn at Marulan. (14820 Hume Hihgway) Very visible from the Highway with an entrance directly off the Hume and lots of alpaca to see.
